WHAT is World Mental Health Awareness Day?
Beginning in 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health (the oldest mental health
advocacy organization, established in 1948!) and the World Health Organization declared
October 10th as World Mental Health Day. This international day acknowledges the millions of
people who suffer from mental health issues. This is a day to focus on mental health advocacy,
education, reducing stigma, increasing support, and generally talking about the importance of
mental health. Although increasing and improving mental health awareness happens all year
(and there are a lot of ‘days’ to focus on specific aspects of mental health), October 10th is meant
to be the cumulation of awareness.
What is the THEME for this year?
This year’s theme is- ‘It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.’ Even if
you find enjoyment and fulfillment at your job, working patterns can negatively impact your
health (think increase stressors, decreased sleep, decreased time for self-care or completing
general life tasks, impact on family time). These factors can significantly impact your mental
health (and general health). Find out more here.
HOW can I celebrate World Mental Health Awareness Day?
Get involved! Maybe that means volunteering or donating to a cause or agency. You can
make it a point to check in on your loved ones, especially if you know of someone who has been
struggling. Educate yourself. Take more time for self-care. Even posting about mental health
on social media can help increase awareness!
