Out of My Mind Movie Review

Almost 4 years ago, I wrote a book review on Share Draper’s fantastic book, “Out of My Mind.”  You can find that review HERE.

Recently, Disney+ put out “Out of My Mind” the movie!!!

Besides the motivating and inspiring storyline, this movie is important for us all to watch for lots of reasons, but the most important being REPRESENTATION.

The actress (Phoebe Rae Taylor) who plays the main character (Melody) is a young adult with Cerebral Palsy who also uses a wheelchair.  The director, Amber Sealey, said in an interview, “I think what is important is that people with disabilities have so far not been welcome into Hollywood.  Both in front of the camera and behind the camera.  That is what needs to change.”  Phoebe Rae did a wonderful job in her first acting gig!  It will be awesome seeing her develop as an actress.

Speaking of representation, the movie showcases actors and actresses of all different walks (and wheels) of life- racial diversity, sexual diversity, physical diversity, cognitive diversity.  And it comes across very naturally as just the flavors of our community!  It also addresses equality, education, and division of resources, as well as alternative ways of learning and communicating.

Besides the importance of casting and representation in this movie, it’s a feel-good movie about a tween girl finding her way in middle school.  It’s fun, funny, and heartwarming (maybe have tissues ready at the end of the film!)!

Read the book (there’s also a second one!) and then watch the movie!
