Sahaj’s book, But What Will People Say?, is a conversation about mental health in general, as well as mental health more specifically related to the individual and their individual culture. As our psychological and therapeutic models are largely Eurocentric, it is not a ‘one size fits all.’ Sahaj walks readers through her own personal journey in mental health, as well as her journey to become a mental health provider.
Sahaj takes on heavier topics like- religion and mental health, shame and its impact on mental health, guilt, immigrant parents/relatives, and learning emotional regulation strategies. Although the content is rich and sometimes challenging, the book itself is straightforward and digestible.
Sahaj provides mindfulness and reflection exercises throughout the book. These help the reader reflect both on the material being presented, but more significantly on their own lives and impacts of their family, culture, and experiences.
Sahaj also created “Brown Girl Therapy”: (from her website) “The community of over 200,000 exists to remind children of immigrants that they deserve belonging and joy, to encourage growth in connection with others, and to decolonize mental health. Brown Girl Therapy is also a hub for inclusive mental health resources, original narrative storytelling, and intentionally created personal development workshops, discussion- based meetups, and events.”
