How to Increase Joy in the Workplace

Face it- we spend a lot of time at work.

There is a lot of research that talks about the negative impacts of a difficult work environment- reduced productivity, burnout, increased anxiety, increased stress, high turnover, difficulty getting solid employees, impacts on your physical health, impacts on your mental health, absenteeism, poor business performance.

What are some ways to increase the JOY in the workplace?

  • Celebrate the small wins- both as an employee and as a company/business. Giving recognition helps you and the other employee!
  •  Encourage employees to bring personal touches (that make them happy) to their desks and offices
  • Work towards a growth mindset- see setbacks as opportunities for change and growth
  • Build in downtime during work- plan to take a walk during lunch or do a quick 10-minute mindfulness activity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZToicYcHIOU&t=3s )
  • Make sure to check in with yourself during the day, especially if you are having a rough or stressful day
  • Talk with your support system- maybe give them a call on your commute home
  • Have healthy work/life boundaries, especially regarding time (no checking emails after work or on vacations!)
  • Promote inclusivity and respect in the workplace
  • Consider a flexible work schedule or work from home
  • If you are a boss or manager, ask your employees what would help improve workplace culture
  • Be conscious about what employees you interact most with- some employees are more naturally positive in their outlook
  • Use any perks, like PTO or flex time
  • Don’t forget about your professional development
  • Give back to your community
  • Set goals for yourself
